Since 2001, the major international banking institutions along with the World Bank have exchanged data in real-time with one another and with central banks using a standard called Statistical Data and Metadata Exchange (SDMX). The fact that the banks essentially speak the same language is part of the reason why you can get cash from your bank account from a foreign ATM when you travel.
